Where’s Wally?

March 27th, 2009 3 comments

So it’s been quite quiet here for a month or so.

Injury and forgetting my domain name renewal aside, I’ve actually been out of the country on holiday. I contemplated writing here a few times, but decided that it’d be far better to spend my holiday time doing holiday stuff.

But…

I’m back.

And very unfit.

I’ve actually been back for about a week now and so far, I’ve only been on the bike once. I’ll have to admit, I almost fear starting to cycle again. It’s interesting that at times of physical fitness, I actually crave the opportunity to suffer and slog up a big mountain. Yet, at times of unfitnes, when the pain and suffering come oh-so-easily, I just shy away from it.

Oh well.

I reckon I’ll have to get back to it this weekend.

Another upgrade to WordPress… another new interface.

New photos might be a little while coming too because the upgrade appears to have messed with one of the plug ins… possibly in a good way.

Good geeking around Geek

September 1st, 2008 1 comment

Thanks to some browsing on the sly by Geek, he picked up the fact that wurple had fallen prey to a search engine spambot. A whole bunch of dodgy links had been inserted into the header file of the site using some vulnerability in WordPress. That probably explains why my page rankings have been decreasing lately. Hmph.

Anyway, it’s been fixed and locked down.

I think…

Shouldn’t happen again…

I hope…

It’s not actually all that surprising

July 16th, 2008 No comments

Today’s cycling news reports that all of the 17 teams in this year’s TdF will not be renewing their Pro Tour licenses in the 2009 season. With all of the hoo-ha in the last 12 months about “who’s invited and who’s not” (unibet, Astana) and “where you can race” (Paris-Nice), it’s not actually all that surprising that there’s been a general uprising.

That gets me thinking about what I do to earn a crust. Working in head office for Operational Risk, I regularly cross paths with areas such as statutory compliance, health & safey, fraud and security. Risk is often accused of being the party pooper. The nagging parent. Paper pushers and box-tickers when there are dollars to be earned. I suppose that this incident with the UCI shows how important it is to actually listen to the folks you’re dealing with and help them to actually achieve something rather than just telling them what not-to-do.

As a side note, a friend suggests getting a job with him as a consultant. Show up. Put together a glorified Powerpoint presentation called a workshop. Tell people what to do. Invoice. Paid. Leave.

Eh… who knows… *shrugs*

Normal Service Will Resume

February 20th, 2008 No comments

Sorry about the down time folks, was having problems with the webhost. Double sorry for anyone subscribed to the mailing lists (especially the big one), who would have received “Welcome to the X Mailing List” emails several times as my host decided to reset everything repeatedly.
