It turns out that the lady who restocks our coffee/tea/milk supplies at work has gone on leave over Christmas and that the folks who organise this stuff for the building have not arranged for a replacement.
Personally, I don’t use this facility much, since I’m a bit of a tea snob and bring my own fancy loose leaf tea.
But for the sake of others, I must ask – how does that work?
The rest of the office continues to function, but they decide to shut up shop. How will the corporate world function without caffeine? There’s going to be hell when certain individuals discover that they are without their morning brew. I suppose I should just give up on having any meaningful meetings this week, since people will be falling asleep for lack of artificial stimulants.
One of the things that has generally let me down in most of my physical persuits has been my lack of flexibility. This has been a result of a number of things, but the two main ones would be injuries (shoulder & calf) and lack of effort.
Whether it be reaching that shuttle which is just a bit too far away, hiking up a hill or getting into a truly aero tuck, my general lack of flexibility has always impeded me.
So last night, I decided to address the effort part of it. While watching a couple of old House episodes, I started going through all of those things my badminton coach used to get me to do.
You know what?
I reckon I feel more tired today after doing an hour of stretches than after 100km on the roadie. Heck. I was feeling less tired after riding up Lake Mountain.
It is also somewhat reassuring, since it’s the kind which makes me know that I’ve done some hard work.
Now.
All I need to do is draw up some kind of plan and hopefully I’ll be able to stick to it. Although, I think I need to find more stuff to watch on TV, since that appears to be the only time I sit still for long enough to do this kind of stuff.
So as the year comes to a close, you’ve all probably noticed that my frantic rate of posting has slipped significantly.
I’m not sure exactly why that is.
Writer’s block? Just don’t feel like blabbering on to no one in particular… maybe… Lack of truly tough rides to write about… hmmm… nah, I generally find time to write about those things. They’re easy to write about.
Maybe I just don’t get as caught up in the whole Christmas period as much as others do. No, I’m not a scrooge about it all, but I’m definitely not as festive as some people.
Or maybe the uncertainty at work with all of the job losses has sapped me of any inspiration to write.
Who knows.
But I think I’m ready to start writing again.
Let’s see what I come up with…
On the weekend, I FINALLY hit the dirt again properly.
Over the last two months, I’ve hardly done ANY proper mountain biking – it’s all been commuting, drit crits and injury time.
AND IT WAS GREAT.
Well.
Mostly.
The first few minutes sucked. I pedalled along up the first switch back climb on the Pink Ribbon Trail thinking, “OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG I’m going to fall” and unclipping every few pedal strokes. Then I remembered how to ride a MTB and all was well again.
Oh and the last few minutes sucked too. Almost had a head on with someone heading the other way after they pulled aside for HPG (who swears that he called out “One more coming”), but decided to roll back sllllloowwwwly on to the trail as I approached, then freeze when he saw me. Let’s just say that everything was clenched as I came to a stop doing a beautiful front wheel stoppie. Scary.
I also had a shot on HPG’s fancy pantsy Yeti ASR that he recently built up. Honestly, I’m not convinced about getting a squishy bike. Maybe it was the fact that from the seat that was too low, too close and that I whacked my knee on his bars every time I stood up.
Ahhh I think I’ll stick with my steel is real for a while. I’m too lazy with my maintenance to look after something with as many moving parts as a dually.
It’s been an interesting month of no riding for me.
Now, at the halfway mark of the month, it appears that I’m back!
w00t!
Following my monster November effort, I took a planned week off the bike. All was well. Then… I raced… and crashed.
Ouch.
Bruised foot left me limping, unable to play squash and unable to do up my cycling shoes.
Nuts.
Then came the rain. Once again, I reiterate – “I do ride in the rain… except for when I don’t”.
No really, riding in the sideways rain didn’t seem very appealing.
But now, two weeks into the month of December, I’m back!
Woohoo!
Great commute today… although the weather made it feel like a late autumn ride. What happened to summer?
… that a sick passenger requires an entire train to stop and wait?
Catching the train in this morning, our trip was interrupted when the driver informed us that we’d have to wait at Camberwell Station for an ambulance due to a sick passenger. No big deal for me, given that I was going multi-modal today, so I just hopped onto the bike and continued on to the office.
While leaving the station, I noticed someone in a Connex uniform standing beside a sick looking someone who was under a blanket (how come someone always has a blanket?) on one of the benches at the station.
This got me thinking…
Why does the whole train need to stop for just one person?
I can understand that if a person had fallen and broken their neck, moving them was not the best idea. Also, if we happened to stop at an unmanned station, it wouldn’t be ideal to just leave a sick person at the station alone.
Yet… there we were at a major, staffed station, with an entire train stopped for one person who appeared to be quite mobile.
I wonder how this kind of stuff is handled in cities with working public transport systems…

Hope you all enjoy :)
Fellow Melbourne cycling blogger Treadly and Me has also been kicking goals recently. You know, it’s kinda nice to have some company in the insanity that comes with obsessively pursuing targets.
Anyway, my plan to move on to another goal for December has been dealt a blow. With Saturday’s crash, I’ve ended up with a rather bruised right heel. This has made both walking and pedalling quite uncomfortable. Hopefully it heals up before the weekend because I really want to do a decent MTB ride this weekend.
