Well the month is over

August 31st, 2009 2 comments

And I haven’t made 1,000km…

Honestly, it was all working against me, with a reasonably severe bout of gastro in the middle of the month, followed by a horribly wet and windy week.

Oh well…

But in happier news… only four more days until I head to Canberra for the Worlds… should be fun :)

Why is it?

When I set myself a distance target, that we get crazy weather. This happened last year too. Maybe if I try this EVERY month, Melbourne’s water shortage will be solved…

Me and my big head

*sigh*

Two pairs of riding glasses broken in two weeks. Both fractured where the arm meets the lense…

My massive head strikes again…

Halfway there, still on track

So we’re about halfway through the month and I’m pretty much on track to hit my 1,000km target. Unlike last year when I did this, I’m not feeling completely toasted at this point in the month. In fact, it feels like business-as-usual with normal commutes and what not. I wonder if this means I’m just generally getting stronger.

Anyway, with the whole PB up 1 in 20 the other weekend, I’m suddenly itching to blast it again. In fact, it’s got to the point where I can actually count on one hand the number of times I’ve gone MTBing in the last month. The other day I also caught myself oohing-and-ahhing over the Orca that Fatty is raffling off.

Am I becoming roadie scum again?

It appears that I’ve come full circle somewhat, from starting out as a roadie, becoming a serious commuter type, doing the whole fixie thing for a while, then a (not-so)-hairy-legged-MTBer and now, back to being a roadie.

Then again… maybe it doesn’t matter what I decide to focus on… :)

Can I do it again?

It appears that I’m on track for another 1000km month. Yes yes, I know it’s still early in the month, but it’s good to have goals. It’s not very often that I do these, mainly because “stuff” just gets in the way. You know… Life. Responsibilities. Chores. Work.

Either way, it’s looking like it could be a good month for it, because there’s five weekends. Last year when I did my first 1000km month, I tapped out several massive rides. This time, I think I’m going to apply Treadly’s technique of riding as many days as possible and seeing where it gets me.

That should help get me well on the way to catching Norm’s total for this year…

It’s just so comfortable…

Did a short commute today on the folding bike, since I’m going to be back in the city this evening and have no intention of paying for all day parking or a train ticket to travel 2 stops. Since it was such a short commute, I ditched the lycra and just wore some jeans and a t-shirt in.

What an excellent way to commute!

It’s just so comfortable on the folder (with a Thudbuster) spinning away in 3rd gear. I’d even be tempted to ditch the clippy pedals next time.

Even better is getting to work and not having to faff about with your gear and have a shower. Instead I just got changed, fixed my helmet hair up a bit and that was that.

Now I normally say I like living in the outer suburbs because I actually enjoy my long commute, but I’ll have to admit that this wasn’t too bad either…

It never gets easier…

It never gets easier, you just go faster
- Greg Lemond

I think I set a PB this morning on 1:20. I say I think, because I don’t really keep accurate records of my hill climbs anymore and honestly it didn’t feel like a PB.

So I rode up today with James & Meng. First time I’d gone for a ride with these guys, so I said I’d hang back with them. That lasted for 500m or so, but eventually I just couldn’t ride comfortably at that speed in my middle ring, so I took off. Now I definitely wasn’t hammering through the steeper bit in the first 2km, but I was sitting comfortably in 39×23 and just spinning away.

I don’t have a speedo on my bike, so it didn’t occur to me that I was flying until I was on the false flat when I looked at my watch and noticed that I was halfway there at 9 minutes something. Time to actually start riding methinks.

So for the remaining three point something kilometres, I smashed it properly. Really gave it the beans. So much so that at about 700m to go, I hit upchucksville hard… REALLY hard. I managed to not chuck, although I’ll admit that it was quite close. That may have put a damper on my final time, but I was still pretty chuffed to see 19:22 on my watch when I cruised into town.

It all felt about the same as any other timed ascent I’d done of the hill and honestly, I was quite surprised at my time. I was honestly expecting 21 minutes or so.

I guess what Mr Lemond said up above applies eh?
