Interesting discovery today – road rash and express lifts don’t mix.
Limped my way into the lift this morning, which runs express to the stratosphere where my desk is. As the lift blasted off, I felt the usual increase in gravity and change in air pressure, followed by a swell of pain in my left leg.
Something like my left shin being on fire.
Ouch…
For the most part, Melbourne is a great place to ride. Decent weather. Wide roads. Hills that are manageable around town. Bigger hills to test yourself just out of town. Sure there are some things I could complain about, but for the most part, I love riding around Melbourne.
There is one thing I could do without however…
Tram tracks…

Ouch…
Starting all over again…
Well… that’s what it feels like.
Over the last three weeks, I’ve hardly done any “serious” riding. Sure there was a bit of commuting and the odd RRR, but there were no lung busting climbs or pushing the boundaries of traction between rubber & dust. The first two weeks were just too-darn-busy. That was followed by injury.
BUT…
I managed to get back on the bike this weekend.
Twice in fact!
Annnnnd now I’m hurting.
Honestly, three months ago, following my 1000km November, I would have eaten these two rides for breakfast and backed it up with another 100km. Today, I feel like rolling over and going back to sleep.
Gah!
Has been a rather slow week for me.
Walking to work on Tuesday, I stepped off the curb and rolled my ankle on a chunk of *something hard* that was sitting in the gutter (I think it was a chunk of loose cement, but it could have been a rock).
I tell ya!
Walking is dangerous business!
It definitely wasn’t the worst damage I’ve done to my ankle, with all of the high impact sports I played (and to a much lesser extent – still play). None the less, it has kept me off the bike and generally less active for the last few days.
Gah!
Three days on, and a week off the bike, I reckon I’m feeling more tired than I would be if I was actually riding. Need to find an outlet for this energy…
It’s been an interesting month of no riding for me.
Now, at the halfway mark of the month, it appears that I’m back!
w00t!
Following my monster November effort, I took a planned week off the bike. All was well. Then… I raced… and crashed.
Ouch.
Bruised foot left me limping, unable to play squash and unable to do up my cycling shoes.
Nuts.
Then came the rain. Once again, I reiterate – “I do ride in the rain… except for when I don’t”.
No really, riding in the sideways rain didn’t seem very appealing.
But now, two weeks into the month of December, I’m back!
Woohoo!
Great commute today… although the weather made it feel like a late autumn ride. What happened to summer?
Fellow Melbourne cycling blogger Treadly and Me has also been kicking goals recently. You know, it’s kinda nice to have some company in the insanity that comes with obsessively pursuing targets.
Anyway, my plan to move on to another goal for December has been dealt a blow. With Saturday’s crash, I’ve ended up with a rather bruised right heel. This has made both walking and pedalling quite uncomfortable. Hopefully it heals up before the weekend because I really want to do a decent MTB ride this weekend.
