Is it just me or is this year’s Tour just really boring? Has Team Lance Astana just spoiled it for everyone? Maybe I’ve just come to expect a doping scandal to shake things up…
Sure there’ve been a few things happening out on the road – Thor vs Cav, Cassar in the inevitable breakaways or trying to figure out what’s happened to Boonen. Honestly, none of these have really captured my attention.
I suspect that it’s not just me however. The news outlets seem to be picking up on the lack of action on the road and looking at all of the team politics. So what did Evans mean when he said that his professional obligations didn’t allow him to talk about the team? And where are Team Lance headed for 2010?
Looks like everyone’s more interested in next year than this year’s race…
So June was a pretty quiet month on the bike for me. I suppose that would explain why it was a pretty quiet month for me on the blog. You’d think that I have no life outside of pushing the pedals.
Anyway, I appear to be back on the boat in the month of July and the kilometres are ticking away nicely. I also seem to have found myself a nice routine involving the Tour de France, where I can watch the final few kilometres of the previous night’s stage while I get ready for the morning commute, which only puts me a couple of hours behind all of the news of the stage winner.
There is one disadvantage to going for a ride immediately after watching le Tour – Paul & Phil.
The last 30 minutes of a stage is usually where all the “stuff” happens. Someone makes a break, a crash happens as the peleton approaches the line or the breakaway gets pulled in. This is where the voices of P&P really start to bore into your skull.
The one that really gets me is Phil’s “acceleration”.
That was nothing more than an acceleration…
No one can match Contador’s abaility to accelerate up the big mountain passes…
Armstrong’s acceleration out of the corners is like that of the Armstrong of old…
Gah!
Driving me nuts!
I’m glad that this year’s Tour de France is finally getting interesting. Honestly, with all of the attention that the biggest bike race in the world attracts, it’s kind of sad to see that two thirds of it has just become an extended training ride for the majority of the peleton. Sure there are the day to day tactics of defending points or jerseys or time, but in the end, there hasn’t been any real racing to speak of.
In other news, TYP got together for its first ride in a LONG time. A 55km loop that which for me became just over 100km when you factor in the commute. It’s good to get out with the guys again and even better to see HPG back on the bike after a flare up of his AS.
I wonder what happened to those days of the weekly 100+km ride out to Whittlesea or the repeated smash up Mt Dandenong. I kind of miss those rides…
